Does Cancer Run in Your Family?

Everyone has some risk of cancer, but your risk is higher if you have a family history of cancer. The more you know about your cancer risk, the more alert you will be.

You should be aware if you have:

  • Multiple relatives with the same or different cancers
  • A relative who has had several different types of cancer (not one type of cancer that spread to other sites)
  • A history of cancer in a relative
  • A personal history of cancer, especially if you were first diagnosed at an early age
  • Ashkenazi (Eastern European) Jewish ancestry on your mother's or father's side
  • A rare cancer in one or more family members
  • A known hereditary cancer syndrome in the family
Lehigh Valley Hospital has a special Cancer Risk Assessment to help you learn more about your risk for hereditary cancer. The Cancer Risk Assessment includes:
  • Detailed personal and family history
  • Confidential counseling
  • Education about the role of genetics
  • Information about risk-reduction strategies
  • Counseling about genetic testing and support for your decision either way
We can do a risk assessment for any of these kinds of cancer:
  • Breast
  • Ovarian
  • Colon-rectal
  • Endometrial (uterine)
  • Melanoma
  • Pancreatic
  • Prostate
  • Sarcoma
  • Pediatric
  • Kidney-renal
  • Esophageal
For information about a Cancer Risk Assessment, call 877-722-HOPE (4673) or 610-402-CARE.
